Ingredients

2 tablespoons lard (or unsalted butter, melted)

Instructions

1. Activate the Yeast

  • In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast.
  • Stir gently and let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.

2. Mix the Dough

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt.
  • Add the yeast mixture and melted lard (or butter).
  • Mix until a sticky dough forms.

3. Knead the Dough

  • Transfer dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for 10–12 minutes.
  • Dough should be smooth and elastic.

4. First Rise

  • Place dough in a greased bowl and cover with a damp towel.
  • Let rise in a warm place for 60–90 minutes, until doubled in size.

5. Shape the Loaves

  • Punch down the dough and divide into two equal portions.
  • Shape into long, oval loaves (about 12 inches long).
  • Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

6. Second Rise
